5 tips for your next vehicle inspection
What to check before your HU to avoid defects and waiting time.
A main inspection runs most smoothly when the vehicle has been well prepared. With a few simple checks, you can avoid the kind of small defects that would otherwise require a follow-up, and save yourself time on inspection day.
Before the appointment: what you can check yourself
Most minor issues can be spotted before you even leave the driveway. We recommend going through the following points:
- All lights: low and high beams, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, number plate light. A burnt-out bulb is quickly replaced, at the HU it just costs unnecessary time.
- Tyre tread and condition: legal minimum is 1.6 mm, we recommend 3 mm for safety. Watch out for sidewall cracks or uneven wear.
- Brakes: unusual noise, a spongy pedal feel, or the steering pulling to one side under braking are warning signs. If in doubt, have it checked at a workshop beforehand.
- Fluid levels: brake fluid, coolant, engine oil, windscreen washer. Low levels aren’t automatic defects but can indicate other issues.
- Visual check, bodywork: rust on load-bearing parts, damaged exhaust, oil leaks around the engine.
What we check during the HU
The main inspection under §29 StVZO covers around 150 inspection points: brakes, steering, axles, wheels, lighting, visibility, emissions, and vehicle identification. The emissions test is usually carried out together with the HU.
When defects are identified, we classify them in three categories: minor defects (badge is granted), significant defects (badge is not granted, follow-up inspection required), and traffic-unsafe defects (vehicle may be taken off the road).
Planning the appointment sensibly
Allow enough time, the inspection itself takes about 30 minutes, but please arrive 15 minutes early. Don’t forget your vehicle registration document (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I) and, if available, the previous HU report.
If you want to play it safe, have your vehicle checked at a workshop a few days before the HU. Minor repairs can then be sorted without time pressure, and you’ll arrive on inspection day relaxed.
If you have any questions about preparing your vehicle, give us a call beforehand, we’ll advise you honestly and without obligation.
