GAS SYSTEM INSPECTION · § 41a STVZO

Gas System Inspection (GAP) for LPG and CNG Vehicles

The recurring legal safety inspection for vehicles with autogas, natural gas or hydrogen propulsion.

What is it about?

Vehicles with alternative gas propulsion, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG / autogas), compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) or hydrogen, are subject to their own legal inspection requirement. The legal basis is § 41a StVZO in conjunction with Anlage XVII StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations).

Two types of inspection are distinguished:

  • GSP (Gassystem-Einbauprüfung, gas system installation inspection), a one-time inspection after the gas system has been fitted. It confirms proper installation and is a prerequisite for the operating permit (Betriebserlaubnis).
  • GAP (wiederkehrende Gasanlagenprüfung, recurring gas system inspection), a regular inspection of the existing gas system. It is generally carried out as part of the main inspection (HU).

At the TÜV NORD Station Berlin-Rudow, we carry out the GAP for you, usually directly as part of your HU appointment.

What to bring to your GAP appointment

  • Vehicle registration certificate Part I (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I, Fahrzeugschein)
  • If available: ECE-R115 approval (system approval of the gas installation)
  • For previous conversions: GSP certificate (gas system installation inspection)
  • If recent repairs or maintenance were performed on the gas system: relevant workshop documentation

What is checked during the GAP?

During the recurring gas system inspection, the following points are examined:

  • Identity check of the gas system and the vehicle (verification of conformity with documentation)
  • Condition inspection of the gas system and its components
  • Leak tightness inspection (Dichtheitsprüfung) of the entire gas system
  • Mounting inspection of the individual components and verification of compliant installation
  • Duration : typically as part of the HU, see HU duration
  • 📅 Appointment : Book an HU appointment directly, the GAP is performed together
  • 📍 Location : Alt-Rudow 7, 12357 Berlin-Rudow
  • 💶 Price : See current price list ⬇

Frequently asked questions about GAP

How often is the GAP required?
The recurring gas system inspection follows the same intervals as the main inspection, every 2 years, with the first inspection 3 years after initial registration for new vehicles.
Can I have the GAP performed separately from the HU?
Yes. If performed separately, the GAP must, in accordance with the 55. Änderungsverordnung zur StVZO (55th amendment to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations), be carried out no more than one month before the main inspection. In practice, performing both inspections together is easier and more economical.
Is my gas system ECE-R115 approved?
Since 2009, ECE-R115 system approval has become standard for retrofitted LPG installations. If no ECE-R115 approval is available, the GAP can still be performed, however, depending on the vehicle, an individual assessment under § 21 StVZO (Einzelbegutachtung) may be required.
